This is a follow-up- to our September 2022 program “The Nonprofit Audit.”

Grant writers are not necessarily financial experts, yet the applications we submit are judged not only by what we write but also the financial wellbeing of our organizations. It is important to look at the financial documents we submit, understand what is going on, and address areas of concern.

    The session will emphasize:

    • How to find and use positive information in your financial statements
    • What are several red flags you can readily spot when you review audited financials
    • How to view expenses and what impact they can have on your financial documents – i.e. ratios!
    • The fraud triangle – what is it and how you can best prevent fraud in your small nonprofit

We will go through nonprofit financials by way of example. To make best use of the session, please send specific questions ahead of time.

    SPEAKER:

Beth Zolkind, CPA is a recent retiree who continues to serve the not for profit sector by volunteering with her local food pantry as their treasurer, and by providing pro bono financial advice to several other not for profit organizations. Previously, Beth was the Chief Financial Officer for Centre Consortium LLC and before that, the CFO of the Robin Hood Foundation. During her 13-year tenure at Robin Hood, she enjoyed working with staff to hone their financial acuity. She trained program staff to analyze audits of nonprofits who applied for funding, and trained development staff to understand Robin Hood’s financial documents as they sought funding from donors and other grant makers. She has been described as “the ambassador of numbers” for the organizations she helps.

Beth’s professional experience includes time as an auditor for the not-for-profit division of Arthur Anderson, controller for the Russell Sage Foundation, and a senior equity analyst. She is also an avid knitter, tennis player, and sourdough bread baker par excellence.
